ASKW Davis Wins Excellence in Construction Award

This year, ASKW Davis, LLC won the “Over $15,000,000 Vertical Construction” Award for our work on the YKHC Qavartarvick Customer Lodging building.

Led by Kevin Clark, project manager, ASKW-Davis, LLC was the selected contractor for the new Yukon-Kuskokwim Qavartarvik Customer Lodging project in Bethel, Alaska.

The old, 26-unit patient hostel was built in the late 1990s, had mostly shared restrooms, and hospital officials said that it was always full. This new facility more than quadruples the hospital’s capacity to host out-of-town family, and is designed to support Bethel’s existing health services, especially the primary care hospital, by providing transient and supplemental housing for patients, family, visitors, staff, consultants, and employees. Housing options also include handicap accessible rooms for people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices, feature wider entryways and walkways, and are American Disabilities (ADA) compliant.

While the building’s primary function is to facilitate healthcare access for the region, it is just as important to serve the community itself by creating a space that is welcoming to all who enter it. As well as housing, the Qavartarvik Customer Lodging project has lounges, public restrooms, a 200-person cafeteria and dining area, market, laundry, business center, offices, break rooms, commercial laundry, and storage spaces. For those who need to spend longer in Bethel, there are extended stay rooms with kitchenettes. The project was a massive undertaking that the ASKW Davis crew took in stride. When asked about the project, Kevin said, “everyone on the project team worked hard to provide the highest quality project for our client and the Western Alaska communities the facility now serves.”

The Parker, Smith & Feek Excellence in Construction Awards are given in recognition of exceptional projects completed by contractors and presented at the annual AGC of Alaska Conference. Davis submitted a package on the projects for consideration and was judged against others in their respective categories by independent industry professionals. Davis’ submissions were reviewed on the following criteria: meeting the challenge of a difficult job, excellence in project management, contractor’s innovation in construction techniques or materials, contractor’s state of the art advancement, contractor’s sensitivity to the environment & surroundings, excellence in client service, and the contractor’s contribution to the community.
