The
Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program Facility is
a 12,000 square foot, two story learning center. The north
half of the building is a two story atrium area which will
serve as a multipurpose use area for project displays, large
class assembly, and study area. It is equipped with a kitchen
and will serve as a community gathering area. The southern
half of the first floor houses the collaborative learning
laboratory. The second floor is made up of offices and recitation
rooms. The recitation rooms will be finished with floor to
ceiling dry erase marker boards. The windows on the east side
of the building look out into the trees of the Chester Creek
green belt.
The
structure is moment frame and braced frame construction on
a concrete foundation, which is relatively shallow with very
wide spread footers due to the high water table in the area
and the long slender shape of the building. The exterior of
the building is primarily glass curtain wall and metal panels
in long thin sections. The roof line is a graceful curve and
in conjunction with the planked appearance of the walls evokes
the image of a traditional canoe.
