The
Battalion Headquarters (BHQ) and Company Operations Facility
(COF) are the first of several command buildings that are
being built in the south-central area of Ft. Wainwright, AK
to improve training and quality-of-life for our troops. This
project area is approximately 8.9 acres.
The
BHQ is classified as a “small-sized headquarters building
with a classroom.” Designed to eventually support eight companies,
it is a one-story, 12,341 square foot building that contains
office space, secure storage, and a large training room.
The
16,680 square-foot COF is classified as “two medium-sized,
two-story operation buildings.” It is actually the first half
of one large, two-story building that will contain four companies.
A mirror line runs north-south through the building, dividing
it into two functionally separate buildings that contain offices,
secure and non-secure storage, equipment maintenance areas,
and gear rooms.
Both
buildings have a structural steel frame with a concrete floor
system. The exterior is primarily Lucabond panels, with decorative
concrete block around the bottom. The interior is steel stud
framing with gypsum wall board, and the secure storage areas
have concrete walls and ceilings. There is a 82,451 square-foot
parking lot that runs across the south side of the buildings.
Also
constructed is a utilidor system that supports the two current
buildings as well as future command buildings in the area.
The utilidors have cast-in-place walls and floors with pre-casted
lids and will contain much of the mechanical and electrical
service.
